Participant Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible to apply if you are a:  

  • United States citizen, including those teaching abroad at U.S. chartered institutions and schools operated by the federal government;  

  • resident of U.S. jurisdictions; or  

  • foreign national who has been residing in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least the three years immediately preceding the application deadline.  

    NEH does not require participants to have earned an advanced degree.

You are not eligible to apply if you:  

  • are a foreign national teaching abroad  

  • are related to the project director(s)  

  • are affiliated with the applicant institution (employees, currently enrolled students, etc.)  

  • have been taught or advised in an academic capacity by the project director(s)  

  • are delinquent in the repayment of federal debt (taxes, student loans, child support payments, and delinquent payroll taxes for household or other employees)  

  • have been debarred or suspended by any federal department or agency  

  • have attended a previous NEH professional development project (Seminars, Landmarks, or Institutes) led by the project director(s)

Who should consider applying?

The institute is open to all K-12 educators.

Early-career educators, nontenured educators, advanced graduate students, and those who have reached candidacy in a doctoral program or are in the final year of a terminal degree program are all encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from educators focused on engaging religious diversity in a range of classroom settings including courses in world history, American history, literature, philosophy, the arts, social sciences, global studies, and more.

We welcome applications from teachers of all religious and secular backgrounds. The institute is focused on the academic study of religion, rather than courses centered around devotional practices or faith development. Applicants do not need any previous experience teaching about religious diversity.

In any given year, an individual may attend only one Institute or Landmarks workshop.

J1 and F1 visa holders should confer with their sponsoring institution regarding their eligibility to receive a stipend from another institution.

To be considered for selection, applicants must submit a complete application as indicated on the individual project’s website. Any questions about applications should be directed to the individual project team.

Application review and offer decisions are determined by individual project teams in accordance with NEH eligibility requirements.

Participant Stipends

Stipends compensate participants for their time commitment and help defray participation costs, such as travel, program activities, lodging, meals (for residential programs), and technical support (for virtual programs).

Participant Acceptance

In any given year, an individual may attend only one Institute or Landmarks workshop. Participants may not accept an additional offer or withdraw in order to accept a different offer once they have accepted an offer to attend an NEH Institutes or Landmarks program. Application Timeline and Materials

Applications to the City of Brotherly Love institute are due by 11:59 pm PT, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.  Applicants will be notified of the admission committee’s decisions on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.  If you are admitted, you will have until Wednesday, April 16, 2025, to accept or decline the offer of admission.  Once an applicant has accepted an offer to attend any NEH summer program, they may not accept an additional offer or withdraw in order to accept a different offer.

Application materials should be submitted through this Google Form, with the exception of a reference letter which your referee must email to NEHinstitute2025@dialogueinstitute.org by the application deadline.  Do not send your application to NEH — applications sent to NEH will not be reviewed.  A complete application consists of the following four items:

  • basic information about you and your teaching, provided on the Google Form

  • a resume or curriculum vitae (not to exceed one page) detailing your educational qualifications and professional experience

  • an application essay, described in more detail below

Your resume and essay can be uploaded through the Google Form or emailed to cityofbrotherlylove@dialogueinstitute.org. Your reference letter must be emailed by your referee to maintain confidentiality.  Applications without all four components will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

Application Essay

Your application essay (to be typed or pasted into the Google Form application form above) should be no longer than 250 words.

Make sure to cover the following aspects:

  • Explain your motivation for applying to the City of Brotherly Love Institute, highlighting your interest in religious diversity and how it impacts your school and/or community.

  • Details showcasing your effectiveness and dedication as an educator, with a focus on any professional experience in diversity education, community-based teaching, or other relevant fields.

  • Share any unique perspectives, skills, or experiences that could contribute uniquely to the institute's learning community.

  • Concrete examples demonstrating how your participation in the institute will have a lasting impact on your teaching, including discussions on specific courses or programs that will benefit from your involvement.

While previous teaching experience in religious diversity is not mandatory, applicants should have future plans to include such teachings. Your essay should highlight your potential for innovative curriculum enhancements.
